3 hours kayaking among dolphins: life lessons

Index

There is a moment during our kayak tour in Golfo Aranci when something strange usually happens.

Phones are placed in waterproof bags. The chatter stops. Even the children, the lively ones, stop asking questions.

And everyone watches.

A dolphin emerged a few metres away. Then another. Then a pup jumps awkwardly beside its mother. The group remains silent, motionless, their paddles steady on the water.

In that silence, something changes within people.

I have seen this moment hundreds of times. And hundreds of times I have seen people come out of the water different from the way they went in. It is not just “a beautiful experience”. It is something deeper.

Dolphins unknowingly teach us things that everyday life forgets.

Here is what I have learnt in 10 years of kayaking with them.

1. Curiosity is Stronger than Fear

The first time a dolphin approaches the kayak, the instinctive reaction is: “Does it run away? Does it attack us? Is it dangerous?”

Then what always happens: the dolphin looks at you, approaches you, studies you. It is not afraid. It is just curious.

And you, as a predator at the top of the food chain, as a human being “dominating the planet”, you realise that a wild animal does not see you as a threat. He sees you as something interesting. To be explored.

What I learned: Curiosity opens doors that fear keeps closed. How often do we not approach something new because we are afraid? How many people, opportunities, experiences do we miss out on because our first instinct is to defend ourselves?

Dolphins are not afraid of us. Perhaps we should learn to be less afraid of the world.

2. Life is Play, Not Just Survival

You look at the dolphins and think: “What are they doing?”

They jump. They chase each other. They roll. They seem to play. And indeed, they do. Marine biologists will tell you that play is essential for cetaceans: it serves to socialise, to learn, to strengthen bonds.

But looking at them, one can only think: they have fun. It is not just functional. It is pure joy.

What I learned: As adults, we tend to forget about play. Everything has to be productive, functional, aimed at something. We work, we strive, we pursue goals. But when was the last time you did something just because you enjoyed it? Without a purpose, without a result to achieve?

Dolphins remind us that life is also jumping for the sake of jumping.

3. Family is Everything (Even for Them)

In the dolphin groups we encounter, there is always a structure. The pups stay close to their mothers. The young play with each other, but they never stray too far apart. The adults protect the group.

I saw a mother gently push her cub away from our kayak, not because we were dangerous, but out of caution. I then saw her return to play with us, after having secured the baby.

What I learned: The family is not just a human concept. It is a structure of protection, of love, of care. And perhaps, in our busy lives, we take those around us for granted. Dolphins don't. They stay together. Always.

4. Communication Doesn't Need Words

In the silence of the kayak, when the dolphins are close, there is no need to speak.

The people on the kayak look at each other. They smile. Sometimes their eyes glaze over. But they say nothing. Because no words are needed.

What I learned: We are used to filling silences. To explain, to comment, to share on social. But the most profound things don't need captions. A sunset, a leaping dolphin, the gaze of a loved one in a perfect moment... these things are felt. They can't be explained.

Dolphins are constantly communicating with each other, with sounds that we do not hear. But they say nothing to us. Yet we understand everything.

5. Slowness is a Virtue

In a kayak you don't go fast. You paddle slowly, following the rhythm of the sea. The dolphins, when they are close to us, slow down. They adapt to our gait.

They are in no hurry. They don't have to be anywhere. They are there, in the present moment.

What I learned: We are always in a hurry. We rush from one commitment to another, we answer messages while walking, we eat while looking at our phones. Dolphins remind us that there is nowhere for us to be. There is only the here and now. And if we do not live it, it escapes us forever.

6. Freedom has no Price

A dolphin in captivity is a sad thing. We all know that. But to see it free, in its environment, choosing whether to approach or leave... that's another story.

They are free. They could swim away at any time. But instead they stay. Because they want to. Because they are curious. Because perhaps, in some way, they too seek connection.

What I learned: Freedom is the most precious thing we have. And we often take it for granted. Choosing to be with someone, not out of obligation but out of desire, is the highest form of relationship. Dolphins choose us. And we choose them. There is no contract, no obligation. There is only the magic of the encounter.

7. Nature does not judge

On tours, I see all kinds of people. Those who are fit, those who are not. Who is afraid of water, who is an experienced swimmer. Those who want to take perfect photos, those who just want to watch.

Dolphins do not make distinctions. They approach everyone equally. They do not judge.

What I learned: We humans are constantly judging. Ourselves, others, the world. Dolphins do not. They accept. And perhaps, being with them helps us to accept ourselves a little more too.

8. Resilience is Natural

Dolphins live in an environment that can be hostile. Storms, predators, food shortages. Yet they continue to play, to jump, to live.

What I learned: Life is difficult for everyone. Even for them. But their response is not to complain or give up. It is to adapt, to endure, and to keep finding joy. Perhaps that is the secret of happiness: not the absence of problems, but the ability to float despite everything.

9. Beauty is Everywhere, Just Look

Every day, for 10 years, I have been doing these tours. Every day I see the same sea, the same coasts, the same dolphins. And every day I find something beautiful.

Different light. A puppy learning to jump. A sunset that colours the water red. The gaze of a tourist seeing a dolphin for the first time.

What I learned: Beauty never runs out. It is we who stop looking. Dolphins never tire of their sea. Perhaps we should learn never to tire of our lives.

10. The Present Moment is the Only Thing That Matters

When you are kayaking with dolphins, you don't think about the past. You don't think about the future. You don't think about bills, problems, deadlines. You are there. Totally, completely there.

What I learned: Happiness is not a goal to be reached. It is a moment to be lived. The dolphins know this. And we, for three hours, learn it again.

The Greatest Lesson

After 10 years of kayaking with dolphins, I realised something fundamental:

We think we are going to see them. In reality, they come to see us.

And in that silent exchange, they remind us of who we really are. Human beings. Part of nature. In need of beauty, of connection, of moments that cannot be bought with money.

Dolphins do not have houses, bank accounts, careers. They have the sea, their family, play, freedom. And they are happy.

Perhaps, the greatest lesson is this: happiness is much simpler than we think.

All it takes is a kayak. A calm sea. A dolphin that decides to approach. And three hours to remember.
