The Secrets of the Golfo Aranci Sea (That Only Guides Know)

Index

There are places you see in tourist guides. Famous beaches, recommended restaurants, scenic spots marked by signs.

And then there is the other Golfo Aranci. The one you can't find on Google Maps. The one that only those who live the sea every day, for years, really know.

I am a KayakingMoresca guide. I have been going out in a kayak almost every day for 10 years. I have seen the sea in all its versions: flat as oil, rippled by the wind, raging on mistral days. I have seen sunrises that I won't forget and sunsets that looked like paintings.

And I discovered secrets that you won't find in any brochures.

Here are the most beautiful ones. The ones that only we guides know.

1. Figarolo Island is not just an island. It is a Thermometer of the Sea.

Whoever comes to Golfo Aranci sees Figarolo Island from afar. Beautiful, solitary, with that lighthouse at the top that looks like something out of a fairy tale.

But we guides look at it every morning, as soon as we arrive, even before greeting guests. Because Figarolo is our thermometer.

  • If the base of the island is clearly visible, the water is calm and transparent. A perfect day.
  • If it seems to flicker on the horizon, there is wind. The sea will be rough.
  • If the summit is hidden by clouds, beware: the weather could change.

The secret that few know: There is a precise point, halfway between the beach and the island, where the sea changes colour. It becomes darker, almost cobalt blue. Down there is a deeper seabed, a kind of underwater canyon. And that is where the dolphins love to play. Why? No one knows for sure. But we guides know, and when the water turns dark blue, we get our cameras ready.

Another secret: The lighthouse at the top of the island has not been active for decades. But local legend has it that, on full moon nights, a glow can still be seen. Older fishermen swear they have seen it. We guides have never embarked on night expeditions to check it out. But if anyone would like to try...

2. Cala Moresca Has a Secret Soul (Hidden Under Water)

Cala Moresca is one of the most photographed beaches in Golfo Aranci. Those sheer cliffs, the maritime pines that almost reach the water's edge, that scent of Mediterranean maquis mingling with the salt.

But what the tourists see is only the surface.

The secret is underwater.

A few metres from the shore, on the left side of the cove (looking out to sea), there is a rock formation that creates a kind of natural submerged pool. The water is very shallow, just 1-2 metres, but there are plenty of fish. Sea bass, bream, saddled bream. Sometimes even some octopus, if you have the eye to see it camouflaged among the rocks.

The perfect moment: Early in the morning, when the sun is still low and the rays filter through the water creating incredible light effects. Those with a GoPro get their fill here.

Another curiosity: At the end of the cove, under a large flat rock, there is a spring of fresh water that flows directly into the sea. You can feel it because the water is colder. The fish know it and hang around. We guides always stop there for snorkelling.

3. Dolphins Have Names (And We Recognise Them)

This is the thing that most amazes our guests.

The dolphins that frequent Golfo Aranci are not anonymous. They are individuals, with their stories, their characters, their families.

We guides recognise them one by one.

How is it done? Each dolphin has a slightly different dorsal fin. Small indentations, scratches, curvatures. Like fingerprints for us humans.

Fixed characters:

  • Broken fin: An adult male with a conspicuous notch on his fin. He is the head of the family. When he is there, the group is cohesive and playful.
  • Mama Chiara: A female with a puppy in tow for two years. You always see her close to the cub, attentive, protective. But if she trusts, she gets very close.
  • Jumper: A young male who loves to do acrobatics. He jumps higher than others, as if he wants to show off.
  • Grandfather: An old dolphin, with a very marked fin and slower movements. We have seen him for years, and each time we wonder if it will be the last. But it always comes back.

The secret: Dolphins also recognise us. Certain guides have a special relationship with some of them. When they go out into the water, the dolphins come closer, as if they know they can trust us. It is not anthropomorphism. It is observation. We've been watching them for 10 years.

4. The Beach That Isn't There (On Maps)

Everyone knows the White Beach, Cala Moresca, Bados. But there is a beach you won't find on any tourist map.

We call it Cala Segreta.

It has no official name. It is not signposted. There are no signs. The only way to get there is by sea, by kayak or small boat. And you have to know where to look.

Where is it? I cannot say exactly, otherwise it would cease to be secret. But I can give you a clue: it is hidden behind a rock formation, just after Cala Moresca, going towards Cape Figari. If you know where to look, you see a small gap between the rocks. Beyond it is a small beach of fine sand, maybe 50 metres long, almost always deserted.

Because it is special: The water is very shallow, very warm, and the sand is so fine that it looks like flour. The seabed slopes gently for tens of metres. Perfect for those who want absolute relaxation, far from everything and everyone.

The magic moment: At sunset, when the sun sets behind Cape Figari, the light turns golden and the beach is tinged with orange. It is one of those places where time seems to stand still.

5. The Exact Spot Where Dolphins Love to Be Photographed

Dolphins are wild animals. You cannot predict their movements. But after years of observation, we have noticed habits.

There is a specific spot, about 200 metres from Figarolo Island, where dolphins like to stop and play near the surface. Why? Perhaps because the currents bring food there. Perhaps because the seabed creates water games that intrigue them. Perhaps because they know they can find kayaks there and they like the company.

The secret: If you want the perfect photo, with the jumping dolphin and Figarolo Island in the background, you have to be there between 7.30 and 8.30am. The light is right, the island is backlit, and the dolphins are more active.

The exact location: I can't give it to you via the web. But if you come with us, we will take you there.

6. The Colours of the Sea Tell Stories

We guides learn to read the sea like a book. Every colour tells something.

  • Light blue: Shallow water, fine sand. Perfect for beginners and families.
  • Intense blueDeep water. There may be dolphins down here, but also currents.
  • Emerald greenPresence of posidonia. Sign of a clean and healthy sea.
  • Dark grey: Cloudy? No, often means rocky seabed. Good for snorkelling.

The secret: Local fishermen taught us to look at the shades of blue at sunset. If the sky turns deep red, the next day will be fine. If pale yellow prevails, watch out for the wind. It works better than weather apps.

7. The Pirates' Cave (It Really Exists)

Along the coast, just before arriving at Cape Figari, there is a cave that is not signposted anywhere.

They call it Pirates' Cave, although no one has ever found any treasures. But the name is apt: the entrance is hidden, you can only see it from the sea, and inside there is a small pebble beach.

What the old fishermen say: They say that in centuries past, Saracen pirates used this cave as shelter before attacking coastal villages. There is no proof, but when you are in there, with the light filtering through the entrance and the silence broken only by trickling water, you believe it.

The secret: Inside, on one wall, there is an ancient graffito. It looks like a stylised ship. No one knows who did it. We only show it to guests who trust us to enter.

8. The Best Place for a Midnight Bath

This is the most jealous secret.

There is a cove, accessible only by sea, where the water is so shallow and warm that at night it is still warm even in late July. The sand is fine, the seabed gentle, and the starry sky is a spectacle because there are no artificial lights.

The perfect moment: The nights of the new moon, when the sky is completely dark and the stars are reflected in the water as in a mirror. Entering that sea, with water that feels like velvet and total silence, is an experience you don't forget.

Where is it? I don't say that. I really don't. It's the only secret I keep to myself. But if you come along and become a friend of KayakingMoresca, maybe one night I'll take you there.

9. Guides Know Where to Take You According to the Wind

The wind in Sardinia changes everything. A wonderful beach with a mistral can become uninhabitable. An unknown cove with sirocco can be paradise.

We guides know this. And we have a mental map of alternative destinations for each condition.

  • Strong mistral: You go the other way, towards Cala Moresca, sheltered of course.
  • Sirocco: We head towards Figarolo, where the island acts as a shield.
  • Grecale: Perfect day for the full tour, flat sea everywhere.
  • Calm wind: You go where the water is most transparent, usually towards Cape Figari.

The secret: Even if the weather looks bad, we always find a corner of paradise. We know every shelter, every rock that stops the waves, every protected cove. There is no day when you can't go out in a kayak. You just have to know where to go.

10. The Most Beautiful Thing Is Not Dolphins

This is the last, and perhaps the most important.

The dolphins are spectacular. When they arrive, everyone gets excited. It is normal.

But after 10 years, I tell you the truth: the most beautiful thing is not the dolphins.

The most beautiful thing is the silence that comes next.

When the dolphins leave, and the kayak stays still on the water, and you are there, in the middle of the sea, with no one around, no noise, no thoughts. Just the breath, the water, the sky.

That silence, for me, is worth more than any sighting.

The biggest secret: The sea at Golfo Aranci is not just a place to see animals. It is a place to find yourself. The dolphins are the icing. But the cake is the sea.
