Low Budget Sardinia? How to Survive (and Have Fun) Without Emptying Your Account

Kayak Tours Golfo Aranci
Index

Sardinia is one of the most popular destinations in Italy, but there is a problem: everyone thinks it costs a kidney.

Dreamy beaches, VIPs on the Costa Smeralda, yachts for hire, starred restaurants... if you listened to the clichés, you'd think you'd need a bank account to put Jeff Bezos to shame.

The truth? You can also have a crazy holiday in Sardinia with off-campus student budget. And I (who always have little money) discovered this for myself.

Here is the ultimate survival guide for enjoying Golfo Aranci and its surroundings without having to sell a kidney.

1. Dream Beaches... for free

Let's start with the basics: the sea belongs to everyone. And in Golfo Aranci there are beaches that have nothing to envy from the luxury beaches of the Costa Smeralda. The difference? Admission is free.

Beach Cost Because it is fantastic
White Beach (or Baracconi) € 0 Very white sand, very shallow water (it looks like a natural pool), and if you want the parasol you pay for it, but the place is free
Cala Moresca € 0 Wild cove among the rocks, surrounded by maritime pines. Crystal-clear water and free snorkelling
Bados € 0 Long, wild beach, perfect for those who want space and tranquillity
Sassi Beach € 0 Small and atmospheric, ideal for those seeking intimacy

Smart advice: Take yourself water and snacks from home. Buying from the only kiosk on the beach costs you as much as lunch at a restaurant. And no, don't go overboard with the perishable stuff: sandwiches, fruit, crackers. The sea doesn't run away.

2. Sleeping: Hostels, Campsites and Friends (or Strangers) 🏕️

Luxury hotels do exist, but they are not the only option.

  • Hostel OlbiaClean, cheap, and full of young travellers. Perfect for meeting people and exchanging tips. Price: around €25-30 per night.
  • Camping Golfo Aranci: If you have a tent (or borrow one), pitching it at a campsite near the sea is the cheapest option. Hot showers, shady places, and often evening entertainment. Price: €10-15 per night.
  • Couchsurfing: If you are open-minded and want to meet locals, Couchsurfing still works. You offer company, you ask for a couch. I've met great people that way.
  • Shared holiday homes: On Facebook there are groups like “I'm looking for/off Sardinia”. Often guys renting a house and looking for others to share the expenses. Cheap and social.

The golden rule: If you book months in advance, you get offers. If you arrive in July and look for last-minute deals... be prepared to cry (on your wallet).

3. Eating: How not to get fleeced at the restaurant

Sardinian cuisine is very good, but beach restaurants often charge the “sea view supplement” that makes you anxious.

Strategies for survival:

  • Packed lunch on the beach: It sounds obvious, but it is the most effective way to save money. Supermarket in the morning, sandwich and fruit, and off you go. The sea also satiates the appetite.
  • Sunset aperitifInstead of dinner, have an aperitif. In many places, for €8-10 you have drinks and appetisers to keep you going until late. And the view is free.
  • Pizzerias by the slice and street food: In Olbia and Golfo Aranci there are places where you can eat a very good pizza by the slice for €3-4. Or try the Sardinian street foodbread carasau, cheese, cold cuts bought at the supermarket and eaten on a bench overlooking the sea. Romantic? Yes, because the sea is for everyone.
  • Ask the locals“Where do you eat that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?” It always works. Tourists go to famous restaurants, locals go to hidden trattorias.

The foolproof trick: Search restaurants outside the waterfront. Just move 500 metres and prices are halved.

4. Getting Around: Car, Bus and Hitchhiking (with Judgement)

Renting a car in Sardinia in high season costs the same as a small rental. But there are alternatives.

  • Bus: Buses leave from Olbia for Golfo Aranci and the beaches. Sure, you are not free, but you get there. A ticket costs €2-3, not €50 a day.
  • Bicycle: If you are fit and love cycling, Golfo Aranci is quite small and flat. You can explore the nearby beaches by bike (perhaps hire it for the day).
  • HitchhikingIt still works in Sardinia, especially if you are young and have a nice air. I have done it several times and have always met helpful people (and interesting stories). Of course, use common sense and caution.
  • Car sharingFacebook groups or dedicated apps to find rides or share the journey.

Extra tip: If you must rent, do it with weeks in advance and compare prices on several portals. Sometimes it pays to hire from local agencies instead of the big brands.

5. Activities: What to do for free (or almost)

The sea is free, sure. But if you want to do something more, there is no need to book expensive tours.

  • Trekking at Cape Figari: The path from Golfo Aranci to Capo Figari is free, It offers crazy views, and if you are lucky you can see dolphins from above. Bring water and comfortable shoes.
  • Do-it-yourself snorkellingBuy a mask and snorkel at the supermarket (€10-15) and go exploring the seabed at Cala Moresca or around Figarolo Island. You don't need a boat to see beautiful fish.
  • Walks along the waterfront: It sounds corny, but at sunset it is one of the most beautiful and relaxing things. And it costs 0 euro.
  • Evening markets: In summer, Golfo Aranci and Olbia organise craft markets and musical evenings. You walk around, you look, you listen, and you don't spend a lira (unless you buy something, but nobody forces you).
  • Photography: If you have a smartphone, you have everything. Create content, shoot sunsets, capture yourself in plastic poses. The memory is free and lasts forever.

6. The Worthwhile Investment: the Dolphin Sighting Kayak Tour

OK, so far we have talked about how to save money. But there is one thing it is worth opening your walletexperience.

I spent money on useless things (souvenirs that are now gathering dust, overpriced cocktails, “I love Sardinia” T-shirts that I will never wear). But the kayaking tour with KayakingMoresca was the only cost I did not regret for a second.

Because it is worth every penny:

  • Fair price: For what you offer (3 hours of adventure, guide, equipment, aperitif on the beach) the value for money is unbeatable.
  • Authentic experience: You are not on a crowded dinghy with the music blasting. You are on the kayak, silent, which I paid for. The dolphins come towards you because they can't hear you. It's a different thing.
  • Indelible memory: The photos I took (and the ones the guide gave us) are some of the most beautiful I have. The likes? Lots of them. But the feeling inside? You can't buy that with money.
  • Aperitif included: After paddling, you sit on the beach, eat Sardinian cheese and salami, drink a Vermentino. All included. Try to find a restaurant that does this snack with a sea view for less than €15. We included it.

The calculation of happiness:

  • Dinner at a restaurant with a view: €40-50, finished in 2 hours, forget it after a week.
  • Kayak tour: €40-50, lasts a couple of hours, you remember it for years.

I have chosen. Have you?

7. The Truth: We Make Our Own Budget

In the end, low budget Sardinia exists. It's up to you.

You can:

  • ✅ Sleeping in a hostel or camp site
  • ✅ Eating sandwiches on the beach and street food
  • ✅ Getting around by bus or bike
  • ✅ Enjoy beaches and hiking for free
  • Invest your money in ONE experience that stays with you

You don't have to be rich to experience a crazy holiday. You need to be smart, flexible and open.

And if you want some friendly advice: save on the restaurant, but not on the kayak. Dolphins do not wait.
