5:00. The alarm clock rings.
The room is dark. Outside, the world is still asleep. My phone vibrates on the bedside table with the insistence of an annoying mosquito. I am curled up under the covers, warm, comfortable, in that stage of sleep when dreams are even more beautiful than reality.
And I have to get up. To go kayaking. In the dark.
“But who makes me do it?” is the first sentence that crosses my mind.
Spoiler: a few hours later, that same question will be answered so clearly that I will wonder how I didn't do it before.
The Wake-up-at-5 o'clock Drama ⏰
Let us tell the truth: nobody wakes up at 5 o'clock happy.
I am not one of those who “in the morning is my time”. No. I am the one who postpones the alarm clock 4 times, who swears in 3 languages, who needs 45 minutes and 2 coffees to look human.
Yet, that July morning, I had booked the sunrise kayaking tour with KayakingMoresca. And there is no going back.
The sequence of events:
- 5:00: Wake up. “But who made me do it?”
- 5:10: Quick shower. Cold water helps.
- 5:15: First coffee (from the vending machine, rabid).
- 5:20: “Maybe I can still cancel?”
- 5:25: No, I cannot. I am ashamed.
- 5:30: In the car. Darkness. Deserted streets. Feels like a post-apocalyptic movie.
- 5:45: Arrival at the meeting point. The guide is already there. He smiles. Too much. At 5:45 one does not smile. It is suspicious.
The First Wonder: Sunrise over the Sea 🌅
The guide greets us with a smile (OK, maybe he is just a happy early riser, does he exist?) and gives us instructions. There are six of us, all with the same expression: “What am I doing here?.
Then something happens.
As we prepare the kayaks, the sky begins to change colour. From black it goes to deep blue, then to purple, then to shades of pink and orange. Slowly, almost shyly.
And when we go down into the water, the sun has not yet come out, but the sky is already a spectacle.
The first paddle.
The water is smooth as oil. Not a wave, not a ripple. The kayak glides effortlessly, as if the sea wanted to help us. The silence is only broken by the gentle lapping of the paddle and the breath of the paddlers.
And the temperature? Perfect. It is still not hot. The air is cool, almost crisp. I finally understand why the guide was smiling.
The Magic Moment: When the Sun comes out ☀️
We have been in the water for 20 minutes. We skirt Cala Moresca, which looks painted in this light. The guide points out Figarolo Island in the distance.
Then, behind us, the sun appears on the horizon.
I cannot describe that light. It is warm, golden, almost liquid. It strikes the cliffs and transforms them. The water, already crystal clear, becomes transparent and brilliant as if someone had turned on a light underwater.
What about me? I forgot that I had blamed the alarm clock 2 hours earlier. I forgot the angry coffee. I am there, in the middle of the sea, watching the day dawn, and I feel lucky as few times in my life.
“That's why we get up early”.”, says the guide. And he was right.
The Encounter: Dolphins Wake Up With Us 🐬
But the best is yet to come.
As we paddle in the direction of Figarolo Island, the guide slows down. He signals for silence. Then he points his finger.
50 metres away, a group of dolphins is emerging.
There are at least six to seven of them, maybe more. Some are jumping, others seem to be playing with each other. And the crazy thing? They approach.
With the kayak we are silent. We don't disturb them. They are curious. One, smaller, passes a few metres away. It seems to watch us. Then he dives and resurfaces on the other side.
I have no words. And no need.
“Dolphins are most active at dawn”, explains after the guide. “During the night they rest, in the morning they look for food and play. And it is easier to see them because the sea is calm.”
That is the difference. The 10 o'clock tours are fine. The dolphins can still be seen. But at dawn something special happens. They come to you, not you looking for them.
The (Morning) Aperitif on the Beach: The Reward 🥐
After paddling, watching the dolphins, witnessing the spectacle of the rising sun, we stop on a secluded beach. We pull up the kayaks. We sit on the sand.
And the guide pulls out the morning aperitif.
Don't call it an “aperitif” in the classical sense. It is more a breakfast of champions with a sea view: fresh bread, cheese, cold cuts, and a nice hot coffee from the thermos. And of course, a drop of Vermentino for whoever wants (it's 8:30 anyway, that's acceptable, right?).
Sitting on that beach, my feet in the still-fresh sand, the sun warming but not burning, the sea in front of me and the knowledge that I have already experienced more emotions than in whole days
There I understood. It was worth it. Bloody well worth it.
What Happens After 9:00 (And Why Are You Jealous) 😏
Back to the starting point. It is 9.30 a.m.
On the beach, bathers begin to arrive. They unfold towels, set up umbrellas, prepare for the day. They are looking forward to eight hours of sun, heat, and maybe a refreshing dip now and then.
We have already done everything.
We saw the sunrise. We paddled on the smooth sea. We met the dolphins. We have had breakfast on the beach. And now?
Now we can:
- Return to the hotel and take a nap (well deserved)
- Go and have breakfast in a café like civilised people (with the appetite we have earned)
- Staying on the beach and sunbathing, knowing that we have already experienced the good stuff
While the others start, we have already won the day.
The (Secret) Advantages of the Sunrise Tour
| Advantage | Because it is incredible |
|---|---|
| Sea as flat as oil | I paid effortlessly, it feels like flying |
| No boat | It's just you, the sea and the dolphins |
| Most active dolphins | Early morning is their best time |
| Perfect light for photos | The golden one, not the blinding midday one |
| No heat | The ideal temperature for activity |
| The day is very long | After 9 o'clock you have already done more than most in a whole day |
| Silence | The waking world is the perfect soundtrack |
The Disadvantages (For Honesty) 😴
OK, I can't just tell you the good part. Being honest is my style.
| Disadvantage | How to survive |
|---|---|
| The alarm clock at 5 a.m. | Go to bed early. No movida the night before. It's worth it, trust me. |
| The initial cold | Bring a light sweatshirt. After 10 minutes of paddling you won't need it any more. |
| The fatigue of getting out of bed | Think dolphins. It works. |
| Breakfast is “after” | Bring a bar to eat immediately after getting up, just so you don't faint. |
| Photos with low light at the beginning | It is dark at first, but wait: the best light comes later. |
The Comparison: 10:00 Tour vs Sunrise Tour
| Appearance | Morning tour | Sunrise Tour |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm clock | Normal | Herculean |
| Sea | It can be moved | Almost always flat |
| Crowding | More boats around | Only you |
| Light | Strong, sometimes blinding | Golden, perfect |
| Temperature | Hot | Fresh, then perfect |
| Sensation | Bella | Epica |
| What you do next | The day continues | You have already won the day |
Practical Tips for Surviving (and Enjoying) Dawn
If I have convinced you (and I hope I have), here is how to prepare yourself:
The night before
- ✅ Go to bed early (23:00 maximum)
- ✅ Pack your backpack in the evening (so you don't think in the morning)
- ✅ Set the alarm clock and put it away from the bed (so you are forced to get up)
- ✅ Check the forecast (with KayakingMoresca they warn you if the sea is not OK)
In the morning
- ✅ Drink a coffee as soon as you wake up (even a quick one)
- ✅ Wear a light sweatshirt (it's cool at dawn)
- ✅ Apply sunscreen after half an hour in the water (you don't need it at dawn anyway)
- ✅ Bring your camera (the light is perfect)
What to expect
- ✅ The first 10 minutes of paddling are magic
- ✅ Dolphins appear when you least expect it
- ✅ The aperitif on the beach is the most relaxing moment
- ✅ You will go home with the feeling that you have done something unique
The Question: Is it worth it? The Answer.
Back to the original question.
Waking up at 5 a.m. to see dolphins. Is it worth it?
I answer you like this: months have passed since that day. I have done other nice things in Sardinia. I ate well, I sunbathed, I visited beautiful places.
But that dawn in a kayak I remember it as if it were yesterday.
The fatigue of waking up lasted 10 minutes. The feeling of being there, in the middle of the sea, with the sun rising and the dolphins playing, will last forever.
So yes. It is worth it. Worth every single minute of sleep lost.
And if you still have doubts, try asking someone who has done it. You won't find one who says “buth, I don't know, maybe I'd rather sleep”.
Because sunrise by kayak is not just a tour. È an experience you carry inside.
