You booked a kayak tour in Golfo Aranci. You let yourself be convinced by the photos, the videos, the idea of seeing dolphins up close. Perfect.
Then, the night before, comes the thought:
“What if I don't make it?”
It is normal. It happens to everyone. I was exactly like you the first time I got into a kayak. My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing, and there was a voice in my head saying, “Why didn't you choose a nice boat with a motor like normal people?”
Spoiler: I did it. And I kept doing it for 10 years.
Here are the 5 things I wish I had known before you start. Save yourself the anxiety and enjoy the experience right away.
1. You don't need to be an athlete. Really.
We start with the most common fear: “I'm not fit, I won't make it”.
I am not an athlete. I spend my days at the computer, I eat more pasta than I should, and the only sport I practice regularly is getting up from the sofa to pick up the remote control.
Still, kayaking I do.
Why?
Because kayaking is not a race. There is no stopwatch. There is no finish line. There is only you, the sea, and a pace that you decide.
The kayaks we use at KayakingMoresca are stable and smooth-running. You don't have to fight the water. You just have to accompany it. A light, steady paddle and the kayak glides away on its own.
The truth: If you can walk, you can kayak. Brute force is not needed. You need rhythm. And the rhythm comes on its own, after five minutes.
2. Tipping Over is Almost Impossible (And If It Happens, It's Not a Drama)
This is fear number one. The classic mental scene: you in the water, the kayak upside down, the dolphins laughing at you.
Reality: Sea kayaks like ours are designed to be stable. They have a very low centre of gravity and a width that makes them virtually impossible to tip over under normal conditions.
In 10 years of touring, with thousands of guests, the overturns can be counted on the fingers of one hand. And they have always been caused by:
- Anomalous waves (rare)
- Unauthorised acrobatic manoeuvres (such as standing up)
- Epic distractions (like tucking the paddle between your legs)
What if it happens?
Nothing. The water is warm. You have your life jacket on. The guide is there in 10 seconds. You get back in the kayak (we explain how, it's so easy) and you have an epic story to tell.
The truth: The real risk is not tipping over. It is not entering the water because you are afraid of something that will never happen.
3. The Guide Is There for You (Not Just to Point You in the Direction)
Another common fear: “What if I make a mistake? What if I can't keep up with the group?”
Our guides are not just there to show the way. They are there to you.
- They explain how to paddle before you leave (you don't need to know this already)
- They correct you if you make a mistake (without judging you)
- They wait for you if you go slower (they don't leave you behind)
- They help you if you have a problem (physical or technical)
- They make you laugh if you are tense (it's in the contract, I think)
The truth: The guide has only one goal: that you have fun and go home with a smile. He is not a sergeant. He is a friend who knows the sea.
4. You Can Stop When You Want (Nobody Forces You to Continue)
Another anxiety: “What if I get tired and can't go back?”
The tour is not a marathon. It is a walk in the sea.
If you get tired, you stop. Simple.
- Want to rest your arms? Stop paddling and float.
- Want to admire the view? Lay down your paddle and look around.
- Want to take a picture? Perfect, the kayak stands alone.
- Do you want to go back? The guide accompanies you (but it never happened, because after 10 minutes you get over it).
The rhythm of the tour is designed to all levels. Those who are better trained can push harder. Those who are less trained can go slower. No one judges. Nobody races.
The truth: The only one rushing you is you. Forget it. We're on holiday.
5. The important thing is not the Technique. It's the Fun.
This is the most important lesson.
When you start, you focus on technique: “How do I hold the paddle? Where do I look? Am I doing something wrong?”
Then, at some point, something happens.
A dolphin jumps a few metres away. The sun sets behind Figarolo Island. The water is so transparent that it feels like flying.
And suddenly, technique no longer counts for anything.
Only that moment counts. That silence. That beauty.
The truth: You won't become a kayaking champion in three hours. But you will experience three hours that you will remember forever. And that's the only thing that matters.
Bonus: Things I Wish I Had Known (But Nobody Told Me)
In addition to the five main things, here are some other little secrets that you only discover after you start:
Sand in your trousers
You'll wet the bottom of your trousers getting into a kayak. This is normal. Bring a change or accept it.
The mocking sun
On the water, the sun also hits from below (reflection). You also put cream under your chin and ears. No joke.
Sudden thirst
Paddling quenches less thirst than you think. Bring a canteen. We have water, but better to abound.
Soft hands
If you are not used to it, your hands may get a little sore. Nothing serious, it passes immediately. And after 10 minutes you don't think about it any more.
Unexplained happiness
After the tour, you will have a smile on your face for hours. Don't worry. It's normal. It's called the dolphin effect. It doesn't exist in medicine, but we see it every day.
Our Promise (to the Fearful)
If you are still undecided, read this pledge:
- We will not leave you behind
- We will not judge you if you go slowly
- We will not make you feel inadequate
- We will help you if you need
- We will entertain you, even if you are afraid at first
And if you really, really can't make it? You can always return to shore with the guide. But it never happened. Because kayaking is much easier than it looks.
